About

My philosophy for the laboratory and training students comes from the ideas set out by my first mentors who took a chance on me.

James Sowers

James Sowers, M.D.
World renown endocrinologist, James Sowers, M.D., put our Division of Endocrinology at Wayne State University on the national map, and because of his support, our laboratory developed and flourished.

David Bohr and Horace Davenport

David Bohr, M.D., and Horace Davenport, Ph.D., DSc.
Distinguished past presidents of the American Physiological Society and scientists, gave me--as an undergraduate--the opportunity to learn to do biomedical research in their laboratories in the Department of Physiology at the University of Michigan.

Guy Banta in a group of people

CDR Guy Banta, Ph.D., USN retired
Guy recruited me to study human performance in extreme environments for the U.S. Navy, and Rick May became my first "swim buddy" in the Special Operations community.

Steven Farrow at desk

Stephen Farrow, M.D.
My first graduate trainee when he was a fellow in endocrinology in the Wayne State University School of Medicine. He continues his clinical practice of endocrinology and public service as an administrator within the Veterans  Administration.
